Gaining experience can be done in a wide range of ways, some more efficient than others.
Primarily you will kill mobs, gather scrolls and books. This is part of why some players like to farm ruptures for as long as possible.
Ancient Knowledge can be converted into Scroll of Knowledge or Book of Knowledge at Home Fort.
